I love to look at diamonds in the jewelry store.  Who doesn’t?  Even if I cannot buy them it is fun to look at the sparkle and shine.

Fun as it is, there is one problem: All diamonds have major flaw.  They cannot sparkle on their own!  If you put a diamond in the dark, it will not shine.  In fact, you cannot even see it!  Its beauty is hidden.  Without light, the diamond goes unnoticed.  Diamonds are simply not capable of creating their own light.  On their own and in the dark, you wouldn’t be able to tell if you were sitting in a room of diamonds any more than a room of rocks.

Instead, a diamond must be taken into the light to be noticed.  The many reflections of light are what make a diamond beautiful.  Once a diamond sees the light, it sparkles and shines!

Do you think of yourself as beautiful as a diamond?  Why or why not?

John 8:12 says that Jesus is our light.  In what ways can you reflect this light to the people around you?  In what ways do you see the light of Jesus in Christians around you?

Going Deeper

1 Peter 2:9 says that God brought us out of darkness.  This means that each and every person that knows salvation through Jesus has been brought out of something bad (darkness) and into something good (light).  Let’s talk about the darkness first:

What was your darkness?

How did salvation change you?  How were you brought into the light?

We are in the light!  Matthew 5:16a (the memory verse at the top) says that we should let our light shine before men.  So we need to ask ourselves: Where does our light come from?

Read John 8:12.  Who is the light?

Jesus is our light.  Our job is to reflect him and his glory by following in his footsteps.  We can do this by reading about his life (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) and acting in love.  Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) says, “You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Girls, you are teen moms.  And you have Jesus!  His love conquers all hardships, all stereotypes, all loss of hope.  He is hope.  And He is light!  You each have an amazing story to tell which means you have a great way to spread the hope and love of Jesus.  Think about it.  He wants you to reflect Him.  He wants your story to be told.  Let us make sure we are displaying the love of Jesus to others in our words and actions.  In addition, let us make sure we remember how God has helped us, so that we may go and tell others of this wonderful light.

Life Application and Further Study

In what ways can you change your actions to reflect the light of Jesus?

You are a diamond.  You are multi-faceted, able to reflect his light in many ways.  This displays your God-made beauty!  Remember that as you continue on this journey.  If you have access to a local store that sells jewelry, stop by the store and look at the diamonds.  Think about how you are that diamond, perfectly crafted and cut by God’s hands, and Jesus is the light.  Think about how much he wants his light to shine through you.
